Parts of India's tech capital Bengaluru were flooded on Tuesday after heavy overnight rain, and a number of people were feared trapped after a building under construction collapsed due to the downpour.

Torrential rain impacted parts of Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday, leading to significant waterlogging and some casualties. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert (be prepared) for urban and rural areas of Bengaluru. Meanwhile, several videos showcasing the destruction surfaced on social media.

On Monday night, the city experienced heavy downpours, which caused waterlogging in several regions and delayed over 20 flights.

Due to heavy rain, water entered the premises of Kormangala Indoor Stadium and the Asian Netball Championship has been postponed on Monday.

Bengaluru has been experiencing rain over the last two weeks due to a depression in the Bay of Bengal and schools in the city were closed on October 16 as well.

According to preliminary inquiry, the entire building collapsed following which people got trapped underneath, a fire department official said

All private and government schools in Bengaluru will remain closed today, October 21, 2024. The school holiday has been announced due to heavy rains in the city and the orange alert issued by the IMD predicting heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in the city.

The regional weather observatory issued the latest forecast around 6:45 am, stating that Bengaluru is likely to experience heavy showers in the coming three hours. The Met department also warned of temporary disruption of electricity and minor traffic snarls.
