An Ohio judge permanently struck down the state's ban on abortion after about six weeks on Thursday and criticized its Republican attorney general for attempting to circumvent the will of Ohioans who voted to enshrine abortion protections in the state constitution.

An Ohio county judge issued a permanent injunction Thursday blocking the state from enforcing its “heartbeat” abortion ban, the first time the entire law has been permanently blocked following the passage of the state’s reproductive freedom amendment last year.

The most far-reaching of Ohio’s laws restricting abortion was struck down on Thursday by a county judge who said last year’s voter-approved amendment enshrining reproductive rights renders the so-called heartbeat law unconstitutional.
