Dry air and gusty winds will continue throughout San Diego County through the middle of next week, followed by cooler and cloudier weather by the end of the week and possible light precipitation by next weekend.

The first person lost last year was a 65-year-old Hispanic man, records show. He died of hypothermia in Balboa Park on New Year’s Day. The most recent death came right after Christmas, in Escondido, when a 54-year-old overdosed on methamphetamine.

A new wildfire was reported today at 5:18 p.m. in San Diego County. The wildfire has been burning on private land. At this time, there is no data on the containment status of the fire and the cause has yet to be determined.

A wildfire smoke advisory remains in effect this weekend for most of Southern California due to wildfires in Los Angeles County.

A new prescribed burn, called /viejas, was initiated today at 4:46 p.m. in San Diego County. The prescribed fire has been burning on federal land managed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Currently, there are no details as to how much land has been burned or the size of the crew executing the prescribed fire.

Smoke from wildfires in Los Angeles is drifting to the San Diego region, causing a dip in air quality and prompting North County fire officials to issue a smoke advisory.

The USDA warns that wildfires, such as those raging in the Los Angeles Area, can render food in homes unsafe to eat.
