Interstate 10 reopened to westbound traffic from I-49 in Lafayette to the Texas border, the Department of Transportation and Development announced mid-afternoon Wednesday. The update comes after a historic winter storm brought several inches of snow to the gulf coast and shut down most of I-10 between Texas and Mississippi.

The snowstorm currently lashing the Gulf Coast is being described as a once in a generation weather event, the National Weather Service said Monday.

On Tuesday, a snowstorm swept through unexpected parts of the southern United States, including Texas, Louisiana, and Florida, shattering snowfall records across the south and delivering an unprecedented and disruptive winter experience to millions of residents.
