Hours after the U.S. Department of Homeland Security ended a policy that kept immigration officials out of schools, churches, and hospitals, Bridgeport Public Schools officials released guidelines that they said would keep their students safe from anticipated immigration raids.

We will not admit ICE agents into schools based on an administrative warrant, an ICE detainer, or any other document related to civil immigration enforcement,” Worcetser Superintendent Rachel H. Monarrez wrote in the email.

This reality prompted the Los Angeles Unified School District to affirm its sanctuary policy for students in the wake of Trump’s second term. The updated 2024 policy bans school employees from voluntarily sharing student immigration information with authorities and promises that every child will have a safe, supportive learning environment.

The House will vote on an amended version of the Laken Riley Act on Wednesday, two weeks after it initially passed the bill.

The bill would allow Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to arrest and detain undocumented immigrants accused of theft-related crimes.
