For the record, Amazon first announced in September 2023 that ads would be coming to Prime Video. Even if you don’t upgrade your Prime Video plan, any movies or TV shows that you purchase or rent on Prime Video will be ad-free. Amazon added commercials to Prime Video for the same reason most of the other big streamers did: It wants more revenue.

With an abundance of content available on a variety of apps, audiences are now spending billions of minutes watching titles on the best streaming services. According to Nielsen's annual 'Streaming Unwrapped' report,

There are some decent titles on STARZ like Outlander, Power Book III: Raising Kanan, and The Couple Next Door (not to mention films like John Wick: Chapter 4, and Spiderman: No Way Home) that you may not have access to now.

Amazon and Lionsgate have struck a streaming deal to have as many as 20 Lionsgate theatrical releases stream on Prime Video each year.
