Buncombe County officials overcounted deaths caused by Helene by as many as 30, according to a statement Tuesday from its sheriff's office and data from the state.

Officials in Buncombe County, North Carolina, where Asheville is located, announced that the number of fatalities caused by Hurricane Helene in the county was overcounted.

Buncombe County, which includes Asheville, miscounted the deaths during a period when communications were severely hampered by the storm, the sheriff’s office said.

The medical examiner's office has examined all decedents found after Helene, making a previous tally by Buncombe County seem to be an overcount.
