Vought served as OMB’s deputy director from early in the first Trump administration until he took over as acting OMB head in January 2019. He was confirmed by the Senate for that post in July 2020.

The administration’s early moves to fire thousands of federal workers and dismantle entire agencies even before Vought took office reflect his influence at the White House.

Vought became the deputy director of OMB in 2018 via a 50-49 vote in the Senate with VP Mike Pence casting the tiebreaker. He prepares to take the helm of an agency already under pressure.
